Vibe Coding: Build a Production E-Commerce Site with AI in One Weekend

What is Vibe Coding?
Vibe coding is the new wave of software development where you pair with AI to build real, production-grade applications — fast. Instead of spending weeks on boilerplate, you describe what you want, the AI generates it, and you refine. The result? A fully functional e-commerce site in a weekend, not a quarter.
This isn't about generating toy demos. It's about building something you can deploy, scale, and run a real business on.
Built by a real engineer with over 12 months of hands-on research in vibe coding — testing every AI tool, every framework, every shortcut. This post distills what actually works from what doesn't.
Here's the truth: very few developers reach this level — where AI generates production code that actually scales, handles real payments, and serves real customers. Most people quit at the demo stage. The gap between "I made something cool" and "I run a real business" is where most people stop.
Have patience. Start with one feature at a time. Build the database first. Then the UI. Then the checkout. Don't try to build everything in one sitting. The 12 months of research behind this post meant thousands of small iterations, not one big bang.
The Stack We Used
Here's the exact technology stack powering this site:
- Framework: Next.js 16 — React with server components, SSR, and API routes in one package
- Database: Prisma ORM + PostgreSQL — type-safe queries, auto-migrations, beautiful DX
- Styling: Tailwind CSS 4 — utility-first, dark mode out of the box
- Deployment: Standalone Next.js build on a VPS with Cloudflare Tunnel
- Storage: MinIO (S3-compatible) for product images
- Search: Server-side filtering with Prisma + predictive search component
Design Tricks That Make It Look Premium
The difference between a "coding project" and a "real product" is design consistency. Here are the rules we follow:
1. The 60-30-10 Color Rule
Every page follows this ratio:
- 60% neutrals — white, grays, near-black for backgrounds and text
- 30% brand color — one consistent blue (#2563EB) for navigation, links, icons, prices
- 10% accent — one orange (#F97316) for the single most important action per view (Add to Cart, Checkout)
This rule alone eliminates 80% of design inconsistencies. When in doubt, check the ratio.
2. Consistent Spacing
Use Tailwind's spacing scale religiously. Gaps of 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 — never arbitrary pixel values. Cards get rounded-2xl, containers get max-w-7xl mx-auto px-4.
3. Dark Mode From Day One
Don't bolt on dark mode later. Use CSS custom properties and Tailwind's dark: variant from the start. We use a ThemeContext that persists preference to localStorage.
4. Real Product Photos, Not Mockups
Use actual product images, never AI-generated placeholders for product cards. Customers trust real photos. AI-generated images are fine for blog headers and social posts, never for the product catalog.
The Open Source Repos You Need
These are the foundations. Fork, study, learn from them:
- vercel/next.js — The framework. Study the App Router, Server Components, and API routes
- prisma/prisma — ORM that makes database work enjoyable. Check their examples/ folder
- tailwindlabs/tailwindcss — Utility CSS. The docs are the best tutorial
- shadcn-ui/ui — Copy-paste React components. Study their composition pattern
- medusajs/medusa — Full e-commerce engine. Study their modular architecture
- calcom/cal.com — Booking platform. Excellent code quality and component patterns
How to Actually Start
- Initialize:
npx create-next-app@latest my-store --typescript --tailwind --app - Database: Set up Prisma with
npx prisma init, define your schema, runnpx prisma db push - AI pair programming: Use Cursor, Copilot, or opencode. Describe each feature in natural language, review the output, iterate
- Design first: Before writing code, nail your color palette, typography, and spacing scale. Write them as CSS custom properties
- Deploy early: Push to a VPS or Vercel on day one. Seeing your site live changes your mindset from "experiment" to "product"
